Powder River Basin

Mapping of the active coal mines, permits, and leases within the PRB.

All of the mined areas in the PRB were outlined in Google Earth Pro. The KML files were then imported to ArcGIS and converted to .shp files. Using ArcMap, the total area of the mines were found. The area of the coal permits were then compared to the area of the active mines to measure the potential growth of areas affected by mining activities within the PRB.

Why the permits extend past the leases:

Hi Yolandita,

The permit boundaries are typically larger than the lease itself because the actual mining disturbance will be more than the actual lease (laybacks, etc.). Also some of the boundaries include leases which have been relinquished or are no longer a lease. For additional questions regarding the permit size, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality is the agency who issues the permit boundaries. They can be reached at (307)352-2617.

The coal leases & lba’s .shp file was actually created in September 2001 (the metadata has that information included). It has been updated consistently since then.
